The Assam government proposed reducing the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Kaziranga National Park from 10 km to 1 km.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said a 10-km ESZ would affect towns and communities near Kaziranga, including Bokakhat, Kaliabor and parts of Karbi Anglong. He said local communities had opposed restrictions on businesses and livelihoods under the existing proposal.
Sarma also cited the Supreme Court while arguing that an ESZ can be between 1 km and 3 km.
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi and environmentalists opposed the proposed reduction. Protests were held in Kaziranga against the move, with concerns raised over wildlife corridors and habitats.
The proposal has led to a dispute over the balance between conservation, local livelihoods and land use around Kaziranga.
