New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI in public schools from 2-K through eighth grade, starting in the 2026-27 school year. The policy is expected to affect nearly 600,000 students.
Mamdani said the policy would keep classrooms centred on teacher-student interaction and require students to work through problems without relying on AI tools.
The move comes as AI use among US teenagers has increased. A 2026 Pew Research Center survey found that 54% of US teens had used chatbots for schoolwork, while 10% said they used them for all or most of their schoolwork.
From high school, students will receive AI literacy courses and access to five teacher-supervised AI programmes.
