How to self-quarantine

Coronavirus is leading people across the globe to seclude themselves. Here are some tips on how to self-quarantine.

How to self-quarantine

Separation

If you are potentially infectious, separating yourself from your partner, your housemates, your kids, your pets are key to stopping the spread of the virus. Keep 3 to 6 feet away from others. The CDC recommends you stay in your own bedroom and use a separate bathroom if possible. Isolation is used to separate ill persons who have a communicable disease from those who are healthy. Isolation restricts the movement of ill persons to help stop the spread of certain diseases. For example, hospitals use isolation for patients with infectious tuberculosis.

Personal hygiene

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Wear a face mask when interacting with housemates. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Disinfection

Do a daily wipe-down of “high-touch” surfaces, like doorknobs, tabletops, toilets, keyboards, tablets, phones, bedside tables. Don’t share dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels, bedding with anyone. Wash these items after you use them.

Monitoring

Self-monitoring means people should monitor themselves for fever by taking their temperatures twice a day and remain alert for cough or difficulty breathing. If they feel feverish or develop measured fever, cough, or difficulty breathing during the self-monitoring period, they should self-isolate, limit contact with others, and seek advice by telephone from a healthcare provider or their local health department to determine whether medical evaluation is needed. Keep an eye on your health. Call a doctor if you develop symptoms or if they worsen.

**Household members **

Your housemates can go to work or school. They should stock up on groceries, pick up prescriptions, keep your home clean. When around a symptomatic patient, they must wear a face mask and gloves if they have contact with his or her bodily fluids.
