#TBT: JFK announces presidential bid
60 years ago today, John F. Kennedy announced his presidential bid — six months later, he was nominated. Some 2020 candidates have already been campaigning for 35 months. 😳
Sen. John F. Kennedy July 11, 1960
“I am announcing today my candidacy for the Presidency of the United States. The Presidency is the most powerful office in the Free World. Through its leadership can come a more vital life for our people. In it are centered the hopes of the globe around us for freedom and a more secure life.”
Just over 6 months later, Kennedy accepted the nomination
“It has been a long road from the first snowy day in New Hampshire many months ago to this crowded convention city. Now begins another long journey, taking me into your cities and homes across the United States. Give me your help. And your hand. And your voice. Recall with me the words of Isaiah that, "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary." As we face the coming great challenge, we too, shall wait upon the Lord, and ask that He renew our strength. Then shall we be equal to the test. Then we shall not be weary. Then we shall prevail. Thank you.”
Kennedy for President
The 1960 presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy, then United States Senator from Massachusetts, began on January 2, 1960, when Kennedy formally announced his candidacy for 35th President of the United States, replacing incumbent President of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower. Kennedy and Johnson won the election on November 8, 1960, defeating incumbent Vice President and Republican nominee Richard Nixon, who would later go on to be the 37th President of the United States. Kennedy and Johnson were sworn in as 35th President and 37th Vice President of the United States on January 20, 1961 respectively. Kennedy would serve as President of the United States until his death in November 1963.
