5 ex-officers charged in death of Tyre Nichols

Five former Memphis police officers have been charged with murder in the death of Tyre Nichols, who died three days after he was pulled over for alleged reckless driving and violently arrested on Jan. 7.

Emmitt Martin III, Justin Smith, Taddarius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Desmond Mills were each charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault. The former officers, who were fired last week following an administrative investigation, were also charged with aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression, sheriff’s records show.

Those convicted with second-degree murder in Tennessee can face 15 to 60 years in prison. Officials will release footage of the arrest tomorrow, Friday Jan. 27, and are already preparing for the community to react and protest. Nichols, 29, has been described as a loving father and someone who brought joy to everyone around him.
