A deeply disturbing case of animal abuse has emerged from Kurar Village in Malad East, Mumbai, where a two-and-a-half-month-old puppy was allegedly sexually assaulted and beaten by a 20-year-old man.

The incident came to public attention after a rescue video shared by the PAL [Pure Animal Lovers] Foundation went viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage.

According to police and animal welfare volunteers, the rescue operation was carried out at a public toilet in the locality after information about the abuse was received. The operation involved Mumbai Police personnel along with local animal activists.

Officials said the accused initially did not open the locked toilet door. After repeated attempts, the police forcibly entered the premises and detained the man. He was reportedly found partially clothed at the time.

Videos from the scene show police and activists arriving at the location as members of the public gathered outside, expressing anger and demanding strict action.

The puppy was rescued immediately following the intervention and rushed for urgent medical treatment. The PAL Foundation said the animal remains in critical condition and is under continuous medical care.

Police confirmed that the accused has been detained and that further investigation is underway. Authorities said a case will be registered under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, along with applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

However, officials noted that the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita does not currently include a specific criminal offence or jail term for sexual violence against animals, with legal action in such cases primarily pursued under animal cruelty laws.

The case has once again renewed calls from animal welfare groups for clearer and stronger legal provisions to address sexual abuse of animals.
