The former Union minister Smriti Irani has been appointed a national general secretary in the party's new organisational set-up under BJP president Nitin Nabin. She has also been given responsibility for Uttar Pradesh.

It is a significant return for a leader whose political career has been closely tied to the state, particularly Amethi.

And the timing is hard to ignore.

Uttar Pradesh is scheduled to go to the polls for its next Assembly election in 2027. For Irani, the state has already seen some of the biggest highs and lows of her political career.

The Amethi connection

Irani first took on Rahul Gandhi in Amethi in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. She lost that contest, but returned five years later.

In 2019, she defeated Gandhi in what became one of the most closely watched contests of that election.

Irani polled 4,68,514 votes, while Gandhi received 4,13,394. She won by 55,120 votes.

The result gave Irani a major political boost and made Amethi one of the defining chapters of her career.

Then came the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Irani contested Amethi again, this time against Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma. Sharma won with 5,39,228 votes, defeating Irani, who polled 3,72,032 votes, by 1,67,196 votes.

Irani was consequently no longer a member of the Lok Sabha and was also dropped from the Union Council of Ministers after the election.

Now, she has a new role.

Why her UP role stands out

As national general secretary, Irani joins a team that includes several experienced BJP leaders. The party's new list names Sunil Bansal, Vinod Tawde, Biplab Kumar Deb and Satish Poonia among the other national general secretaries.

But Irani's assignment is particularly notable because of the state she has been given.

Uttar Pradesh sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha and is also the country's most populous state. Its Assembly election will therefore be an important contest for both the BJP and its opponents.

Irani now returns to that political battleground in a different capacity.

She will be working within the party organisation rather than fighting for a particular Lok Sabha seat.

That is a different kind of political role, but it puts a familiar face back into BJP's work in Uttar Pradesh.

TL;DR | News At a Glance

  • Smriti Irani has returned to the BJP's national organisation as a national general secretary.

  • She has been given responsibility for Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly election.

  • Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi in 2019, before losing the seat to Congress's Kishori Lal Sharma in 2024.

A comeback after a very public defeat

Irani's return also comes after a period in which she was largely outside the BJP's central organisational spotlight.

Her political profile, however, never disappeared.

Before entering politics full-time, Irani was known nationally as a television actor. She later became one of the BJP's most recognisable leaders and served in the Union government, including as Minister for Women and Child Development.

Her political journey has now come full circle in an unusual way.

She entered the national spotlight through television, became a major BJP campaigner, defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, lost the same seat five years later and has now returned to the BJP's national organisation with responsibility for the entire state.

What role she eventually plays in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh election will become clearer as the campaign takes shape.
