Being able to leave home, contact family and seek help are basic freedoms. But what happens when a person is allegedly confined inside their own home and threatened into silence?
A case reported in Hyderabad has raised serious concerns about the safety of vulnerable women and the difficulties survivors can face when seeking help. An 18-year-old woman from Myanmar has accused her husband and three of his friends of repeatedly sexually assaulting her while she was allegedly kept locked inside a rented house.
The allegations came to light in October after the house owner reportedly broke open the lock to collect overdue rent.

What Happened In Hyderabad?
According to India Today, a woman had been living in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, when she met Mohammad Fayaz.
She alleged that Fayaz promised to marry her and brought her to India in May without informing her family. The two reportedly married three to four days after arriving in Hyderabad and subsequently rented a house in the city's Kanchanbagh area.
Around a month after the marriage, the woman alleged, Fayaz brought three friends to stay at the house.
She identified them as Ahmad Mujeeb, Noor Kamal and Zia-ur-Rehman. According to the complaint, Fayaz would lock the house from outside before leaving and send his friends inside, where they allegedly sexually assaulted her.
The woman also alleged that two of the men threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the assaults.
She reportedly did not approach the police earlier because she was afraid and uncertain about where to seek help.

How Did It Come To Light?
The case came to light on 23 October, when the house owner arrived to collect pending rent.
According to the report, he found the house locked from the outside and broke open the lock, allowing the woman to leave.
She subsequently contacted her family using another person's mobile phone and was taken to a relative's house.
On 26 October, her relative, Mohammad Rasheed, accompanied her to a police station, where she lodged a complaint.
The reports describe the alleged abuse as continuing for months. However, the precise duration should be treated cautiously until confirmed through the police investigation.
Who Are The Accused?
The four men named in the India Today report are Mohammad Fayaz, the woman's husband, and his three friends, Ahmad Mujeeb, Noor Kamal and Zia-ur-Rehman.

What Action Has The Police Taken?
According to the reports published on 27 October, police registered a first information report (FIR) following the woman's complaint.

The Bigger Question: Is Marriage A Guarantee Of Safety?
The case raises concerns about women's safety within marriage, particularly when a partner allegedly becomes a source of abuse. For women who cross international borders to marry and find themselves far from familiar support networks, seeking help can become even more difficult.
The woman's account also highlights the importance of accessible reporting channels, safe accommodation and legal assistance for survivors of sexual violence, regardless of their nationality.
The bigger question remains: how can women be protected when the person they marry allegedly becomes a threat to their safety, especially when they are isolated from family and support systems across borders?
