A proposal does not become a relationship simply because one person wants it to. A person's refusal remains a refusal, and crossing that boundary can turn a personal dispute into a serious safety issue.
That question is now at the centre of an incident in Mysuru, where a 26-year-old man from Karnataka's Mandya district allegedly set himself on fire while confronting a diploma engineering student about accepting his love. The incident left both the man and the student injured and led to police action.

What Happened In Mysuru?
The incident took place at around 10:15 am on 29 September, in the Vijayanagar area of Mysuru.
According to Vijayanagar police, the man, identified as Chandan, intercepted the student as she was coming out of a community hostel where she was staying. The hostel is located within the Vijayanagar police limits.
Police said Chandan insisted that the student accept his love. He then allegedly doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire before trying to hug her.
The student managed to free herself. She nevertheless suffered burn injuries. People at the spot intervened and helped put out the flames.
The incident was also reported near Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering, where the student was pursuing her studies. India Today reported that she had rejected Chandan's advances before the incident.

Who Is Chandan?
Police identified the accused as Chandan, 26, from Halaguru village in Malavalli taluk of Mandya district.
The student and Chandan are reportedly from the same village. Police also said they belong to the same community.
The student had completed her pre-university education in Bengaluru before joining a diploma engineering course in Mysuru. She was staying at a hostel in the city for her studies.
Chandan worked in agriculture in his native place, according to The Times of India.
Why Did He Do It?
The available police account points to a rejected romantic proposal.
Police said Chandan was trying to persuade the student to accept his love. When she did not agree, he allegedly took the extreme step of setting himself on fire and then attempted to embrace her while he was burning.
The man had allegedly been pursuing the student for around three years and that she had rejected his proposals. That detail has not been independently confirmed in the police account cited by the Times of India, so it remains a reported claim rather than an established fact.

What Happened To The Two?
Chandan suffered severe burn injuries. The Times of India reported that he had suffered burns covering more than 60% of his body and was being treated at KR Hospital in Mysuru.
The student suffered comparatively minor injuries and was reported to be out of danger while receiving treatment.
Other reports have given different estimates for Chandan's burns, so the latest police-linked figure of more than 60% is used here.

What Police Action Has Been Taken?
Vijayanagar police have taken up a case against Chandan. The Times of India reported that the case involves charges relating to attempted murder and an attempt to commit suicide.
The precise FIR sections have not been published in the reports reviewed for this article. That distinction matters because the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaced the IPC from 1 July 2024, contains specific provisions governing attempts to murder and certain attempts to commit suicide. Section 109 deals with attempt to murder, while Section 226 concerns an attempt to commit suicide specifically intended to compel or restrain a public servant from exercising lawful power.
The investigation will therefore determine the exact offences applicable to the incident based on the evidence, including the student's injuries and the circumstances in which the fire was started.

The Bigger Question: What Happens When "No" Is Not Accepted?
The incident raises a larger issue beyond this particular case: where does a proposal end and coercion begin?
A person can express romantic interest, but the other person is free to reject it. That rejection does not create an obligation to continue the relationship, meet the person or accept physical contact.
In this case, the alleged act did not affect only Chandan. According to police, the student was also injured when he tried to embrace her while on fire. That is why the incident is being investigated not simply as an act of self-harm, but also in relation to the harm allegedly caused to another person.
The case also shows why incidents involving self-harm threats or attempts during relationship disputes can quickly become safety emergencies for other people involved.
For now, the investigation will have to establish exactly how the fire started, how the student sustained her injuries and what intent can be established from the available evidence. The accused remains entitled to due process, and the allegations against him have not been tested in court.
