Before entering politics, Balendra Shah was better known by a shorter name.
Balen.
The rapper from Kathmandu built his reputation through music that criticised corruption, inequality and the political establishment. Years later, the same voice helped him connect with a younger generation frustrated with Nepal’s traditional political system.
Today, Balen Shah is one of the most closely watched political figures in Nepal.
A Rapper Who Spoke About Politics
Balendra Shah was born in 1990 in Kathmandu to an Ayurvedic practitioner father and a homemaker mother.
He studied civil engineering before completing a master’s degree in structural engineering at Visvesvaraya Technological University in India.
But alongside his studies, Shah developed another identity.
Music.
He gained attention through Kathmandu’s freestyle rap scene, including Raw Barz competitions.
His songs blended Nepali classical sounds with hip-hop, often criticising corruption, poverty and inequality.
One track, “Balidan,” accused political leaders of looting the country while ordinary citizens struggled. The song resonated strongly with young listeners.
Through music, Shah had already begun speaking about the issues that many young Nepalis felt were ignored.

The Earthquake That Changed His Path
The 2015 earthquake in Nepal became a turning point.
The disaster killed thousands of people and destroyed large parts of the country’s infrastructure, including homes in and around Kathmandu.
Working as a civil engineer, Shah joined rebuilding efforts. According to reports, participated in rebuilding efforts after the 2015 earthquake.
The experience exposed him directly to the structural problems of Nepal’s cities and the weaknesses in urban planning.
At the same time, public anger was growing against political leaders over corruption and governance failures.
For Shah, the moment revealed how politics and infrastructure decisions affected everyday life.
The Unlikely Mayoral Campaign
In 2022, Shah entered politics.
Instead of joining an established political party, he ran for mayor of Kathmandu as an independent candidate.
His campaign looked different from traditional political campaigns.
He relied heavily on volunteers, social media and direct outreach rather than party machinery. His appearances often drew attention, with Shah wearing a black blazer and jeans, dark sunglasses and sometimes draped in the Nepali flag.
The campaign quickly gained traction among younger voters and people frustrated with established political parties.
At 32 years old, Shah defeated candidates from Nepal’s dominant parties and became mayor of Kathmandu.
The result was widely seen as one of the most surprising political victories in the country in recent years.
A Different Style Of Governance
As mayor, Shah focused on practical urban issues.
His administration prioritised improvements in roads, water supply, sewage systems and electricity services.
Drawing on his engineering background, he regularly inspected construction sites and public works projects. Some of these inspections were streamed live on social media, giving the public a direct look at how the city administration functioned.
The city also launched initiatives such as community health clinics, vocational training programmes in schools and the distribution of menstrual health products.
Supporters praised his willingness to confront problems such as traffic congestion and illegal construction.
Critics, however, argued that some of the actions against encroachments and street vendors displaced low-income residents.
A Political Voice For A Younger Generation
Shah frequently clashed with national political parties and avoided aligning himself with established blocs.
On social media, he blended political messaging with elements from his earlier career, sometimes mixing policy updates with rap lines.
During the anti-corruption protests of 2025, Shah voiced support for demonstrators and amplified their demands online. At the same time, he said the movement should be led primarily by young people.
The protests reflected a growing frustration among younger Nepalis with political dynasties and systemic corruption.
In that moment, Shah became a prominent figure for a generation seeking change.
More Than A Rapper
Balen Shah’s journey from rap battles to city hall reflects a broader shift in Nepal’s politics.
His rise has shown how figures outside traditional party structures can gain support by connecting with younger voters and addressing everyday governance issues.
Whether through music, engineering or politics, Shah has continued to position himself as a voice speaking directly to public concerns.
For many young Nepalis, that has made him more than a former rapper.
He has become a symbol of a different kind of political leadership.
