Apple could be changing its usual iPhone launch routine this year.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to arrive in September 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 is reportedly being pushed to early 2027.
The split launch has been reported for months, but recent comments from Apple supplier Pegatron have added weight to the timeline. Apple itself has not announced the 2026 iPhone launch schedule.
The Pro models are also expected to bring several hardware changes, including a new processor, camera upgrades and a smaller Dynamic Island.
Here is what the latest reports suggest.
iPhone 18 Pro: What’s New?
1. A20 Pro chip
The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to use Apple's next-generation A20 Pro chip.
Reports suggest the processor could be built using TSMC's first-generation 2nm process, moving on from the 3nm technology used for the A19 Pro.
The move could bring improvements in performance and power efficiency, although Apple's actual performance claims will only be known once the chip is officially announced.
2. A smaller Dynamic Island
The Dynamic Island could become smaller on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.
Reports suggest Apple may move some of the Face ID components beneath the display, allowing the cut-out to shrink.
The precise design has not been confirmed, however.
So far, reports point to a smaller Dynamic Island rather than a completely camera-free display.

3. Variable-aperture main camera
The main camera could receive one of the most interesting upgrades.
Both iPhone 18 Pro models are reportedly expected to get a variable-aperture 48MP main camera.
A variable aperture would allow the amount of light entering the camera to be adjusted, potentially giving users greater control over exposure and depth of field.
The feature remains unconfirmed by Apple.
4. Apple's C2 modem
Apple is reportedly preparing its next-generation C2 modem for the iPhone 18 Pro models.
The company began moving towards its own modem technology with the C1, introduced in the iPhone 16e, followed by the C1X in the iPhone Air.
The C2 is expected to bring further improvements in cellular performance and power efficiency, although Apple has not announced its specifications.
5. New N2 connectivity chip
The Pro models are also expected to move from Apple's N1 chip to a next-generation N2 chip.
The N1 chip in current models supports technologies including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.
Details about what the N2 will add are still limited, so this should be treated as an expected hardware upgrade rather than a confirmed feature list.
6. Larger battery on the Pro Max
Battery life could also get an upgrade.
Reports citing alleged regulatory database information suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max could have a battery nearly 10% larger than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
That could help improve battery life, although actual endurance will depend on the processor, display and software as well as battery capacity.
The exact capacity has not been confirmed by Apple.
7. A redesigned Camera Control
Apple could also change the Camera Control button.
Reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro models could use a simpler version of the button, with changes to its touch and haptic functions.
The reported design would retain pressure sensitivity while removing some of the current touch-sensitive functionality.
This is another reported change rather than an Apple-confirmed specification.
Other Reported iPhone 18 Pro Changes
There could be several smaller changes as well.
Reports have pointed to LTPO+ displays, a redesigned rear Ceramic Shield area around MagSafe and new colour options, including a reported Dark Cherry finish.
The display sizes are expected to remain broadly similar to the current generation, at around 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max.
A 24MP front camera has also been reported for the iPhone 18 range, although this is less firmly established than some of the Pro upgrades above.
What About The Foldable iPhone?
The biggest addition to Apple's 2026 line-up could be a device that does not carry the iPhone 18 name at all.
Apple is widely reported to be preparing its first foldable iPhone for the same general launch window as the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Reuters reported in 2025 that Apple was exploring test production of foldable iPhones, while a later Reuters report said Apple remained on track for a September 2026 launch despite engineering issues during testing.
Recent reports have referred to the foldable as the “iPhone Ultra”, but Apple has not confirmed that name.
Its final name, design, price and specifications remain unconfirmed.
Why Is Apple Splitting The iPhone 18 Launch?
Apple has not officially explained the reported change.
However, reports have linked the staggered launch to shortages involving memory and other components.
According to reports citing Pegatron executives, Apple is expected to prioritise its premium models for the autumn launch, while the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and a new iPhone Air are expected to follow in early 2027.
Reuters had also reported earlier this year that Apple planned to prioritise its premium iPhones in 2026, with the standard iPhone 18 expected in the first half of 2027. Reuters noted at the time that it could not independently verify the report.
When Will The iPhone 18 Launch In India?
There is no officially confirmed India launch date yet.
The current reporting points towards the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max launching in September 2026, with the standard iPhone 18 expected in early 2027.
A specific September event date should not be presented as confirmed until Apple announces it.
The Bottom Line
The iPhone 18 could mark a significant change for Apple, not just because of its new hardware but because of the way the company is expected to launch the range.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected first, with reports pointing to an A20 Pro chip, smaller Dynamic Island, variable-aperture camera, C2 modem, N2 connectivity chip, a larger Pro Max battery and changes to Camera Control.
The standard iPhone 18 is reportedly being pushed to early 2027.
And alongside the Pro models, Apple is expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone.
For now, however, Apple has confirmed none of these iPhone 18 specifications or launch dates.
