For 16 years, Meena Haldar worked for the same family in Delhi.
On June 18, 2026, the 45-year-old domestic worker was allegedly killed by her employer, dermatologist Dr Manish Gupta, at the family's home in Kailash Hills, according to a Delhi Police chargesheet.
Police allege the confrontation began after Gupta became angry that his adjoining clinic had not been cleaned. Investigators allege he then asked Haldar to clean a storeroom on the terrace, where he allegedly struck her on the head with a cricket bat before chasing her onto the terrace and stabbing her six times in the neck.
The attack was allegedly witnessed from a ninth-floor flat by a couple in their 60s. Their statements are among the 43 witnesses cited in the chargesheet.
A roughly 340-page chargesheet filed by Delhi Police details what investigators say happened that morning, the longer dispute between Gupta and Haldar and the evidence collected during the investigation.
Gupta has been charged with murder. The allegations have not been established by a court.

What Happened In Kailash Hills?
According to the Delhi Police chargesheet, Meena Haldar had worked for the Gupta family for around 16 years. On June 18, she arrived at their home in the Mount Kailash area for her usual work.
Gupta, who operated a dermatology clinic adjoining the family's residence, allegedly asked Haldar to clean the clinic because patients were expected later that morning.
When he returned and found that the clinic had not been cleaned, police allege that Gupta became angry.
The chargesheet says Gupta then asked Haldar to clean a storeroom on the terrace. Police allege that he was waiting there with a cricket bat and a knife.
When Haldar entered, Gupta allegedly struck her on the head with the bat. According to the police account, she managed to flee the storeroom, but Gupta allegedly followed her onto the terrace and stabbed her six times in the neck.
Police say Haldar died at the scene.
Gupta was arrested on June 18, the day of the alleged killing.

A Couple Allegedly Watched The Attack From The 9th Floor
The case also has an unusual eyewitness account.
According to The Indian Express, Vinay and Kamini, a couple in their 60s who lived on the ninth floor of a nearby DDA building, allegedly saw Gupta and Haldar during the confrontation from their home.
Their statements were later included among the witnesses cited in the police chargesheet.
A neighbour also made a PCR call at around 11.40am. Police subsequently reached the area and found Haldar's body on the terrace.
The chargesheet reportedly contains statements from 43 witnesses, along with physical and forensic evidence collected during the investigation.

Who Is The Accused?
The accused is Dr Manish Gupta, a dermatologist who lived with his family in Kailash Hills and operated a clinic from the premises.
Delhi Police arrested Gupta on June 18. A Saket court subsequently granted police custody for two days.
Police later filed a roughly 340-page chargesheet before the Saket court. Gupta faces a murder charge under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The case remains before the court. The allegations against Gupta have not been established by a final judicial finding.

What Do Police Say Led To The Alleged Attack?
The police investigation points to a dispute that had developed over time.
According to the chargesheet, Gupta had become increasingly unhappy with Haldar and believed she did not follow his instructions but gave greater importance to those of his wife, Tina.
Police also allege that Gupta had asked his wife to remove Haldar from the job a few months before the alleged killing. His wife opposed the decision because of her long association with Haldar.
The immediate confrontation on June 18, according to the chargesheet, allegedly began over the cleaning of Gupta's clinic.
Earlier reports had also referred to Gupta's alleged belief that Haldar was bringing "bad energy" into the home and concerns about her alleged influence over his son and family matters. However, subsequent reporting on the chargesheet has focused more heavily on the employment dispute and Gupta's dissatisfaction with Haldar's work.

What About The Mental-Health Defence?
Gupta's family had earlier raised his history of taking medication for mental-health issues.
The police chargesheet says investigators examined his medical records and subjected him to psychiatric evaluation. Police said they found no concrete evidence of a recent behavioural change that would explain the alleged offence.
That does not, by itself, determine Gupta's legal responsibility. Any question about his mental state and its legal relevance will ultimately be considered by the court based on the evidence and applicable law.

What Does The Case Say About Domestic Work In India?
Domestic work often takes place inside private homes, where workers can spend years working closely with an employer and their family. Haldar, for instance, had reportedly worked for the Gupta family for around 16 years.
According to Census 2011 data cited by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, India had 47,81,355 domestic workers. That figure is based on 2011 Census data and should not be treated as a current 2026 estimate.
Domestic workers are also covered by specific parts of India's broader social-security and workplace-protection framework. The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, includes domestic workers within its scope.
The Kailash Hills case has drawn attention to the power dynamics that can exist between domestic workers and employers, as police allege that a dispute over work and instructions escalated into a fatal attack.
The allegations will be tested in court.
