A 40-year-old man has been booked after local residents allegedly caught him sexually abusing a female stray dog inside an open gutter in Kandivali East.

The incident took place on 1 February, when residents heard distressing cries and grew suspicious. The man, identified as Sanjay M. Goud, was found inside a drain with the dog. Locals alerted the police and the fire brigade.

Fire brigade personnel later rescued both the accused and the animal from the drain. An FIR was subsequently registered at Samata Nagar Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

According to animal rights activists, the accused reportedly had blood on his face, although no visible injuries were found on his body. The FIR was filed by a local animal feeder with assistance from PETA India and Marmik Animal Welfare Foundation.

Activists stated that the accused was booked under provisions related to animal cruelty, as police cited the absence of a specific section addressing sexual assault of animals under the current legal framework.

The injured dog was taken to Bombay Veterinary College, where a vetero-legal examination was conducted. The animal is currently under expert medical care and is reportedly not eating or moving properly.

Animal welfare groups noted that this was the second reported case of animal abuse from the same locality in the past two months. The investigation is ongoing.
