Who Is Dhinidhi Desinghu?

Dhinidhi Desinghu is a young Indian swimmer from Bengaluru, Karnataka. Born on 17 May 2010, she began swimming as a child, although she did not initially plan to become a competitive athlete.

Her parents introduced her to swimming when she was around seven years old. Their intention was to help her learn a life skill, become more confident and socialise with other children.

However, she gradually developed an interest in the sport and began showing signs of being a talented swimmer.

By the age of nine, she had started training seriously and competing against children several years older than her.

Her coaches soon noticed her dedication and ability to improve. She joined Dolphin Aquatics in Bengaluru, where she trained under coaches Nihar Ameen and Madhu Kumar.

Her progress was particularly noticeable in freestyle events, especially the 100m and 200m categories.

From National Gold Medals To The Paris Olympics At 14

Dhinidhi's rise through competitive swimming was rapid. In 2023, she won seven gold medals at the National Games in Goa and claimed the women's 200m freestyle title at the National Aquatic Championships with a national-record time of 2:04.24.

The same year, she represented India at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. She went on to compete at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha in 2024 and won medals at international age-group competitions in Singapore and Malaysia.

Her biggest milestone came in 2024, when she qualified for the Paris Olympics through the universality quota at just 14. Competing in the women's 200m freestyle, she became the youngest member of India's contingent at the Games.

Although she did not win a medal, the experience gave her an opportunity to compete on the Olympic stage at an early age. She continued to build her record after Paris, winning bronze in the women's 50m freestyle at the 2025 Senior National Aquatic Championships and competing at national and international events.

Croatia's Ana Bobanovic won gold in 55.89 seconds, while New Zealand's Alyssa Lawson took silver in 56.13 seconds. Dhinidhi had qualified with the third-fastest time of 56.80 seconds.

Her time in the final broke her previous national record of 56.57 seconds, set in Ahmedabad on 18 June 2026. She also became the first Indian swimmer to win a Youth Olympics medal.

Speaking to The Indian Express, she said she aimed to go below 56 seconds but missed three days of swimming after the pool closed in Dakar. Despite the disruption and challenging weather, she delivered a record-breaking performance.

She is also competing in the 200m individual medley and 200m freestyle. Her coach, Nihar Ameen, credited her discipline and work ethic, noting that she had broken the national record three times in 2026.

At 16, Dhinidhi has already represented India at the Asian Games, the World Aquatics Championships and the Paris Olympics.
