The fire started around 3:30-4 am, with reports attributing it to a ventilator explosion. At least 39 newborns were in the NICU when the fire broke out. Hospital staff rescued 36 infants, while three died from smoke inhalation and burn injuries.
The incident prompted Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to order a high-level investigation.
Opposition leaders also demanded a safety audit of government and municipal hospitals across Maharashtra.
