A 26-year-old woman died after falling from a seventh-floor window at a hotel in São Luís, Brazil, while visiting the city with her boyfriend for a poker tournament.
Renata, a mother of two, had been staying at the Rio Poty Hotel. On their final night, the couple went out drinking and returned to the hotel.
CCTV footage showed Renata sitting on a window ledge as the couple entered the hotel. As she leaned backwards, the aluminium structure gave way, causing her to fall onto a canopy above the hotel entrance.
Her boyfriend, Leonardo, initially appeared unable to understand what had happened. He was later seen explaining the incident to a hotel employee.
Police ruled out his involvement, saying the CCTV footage showed no indication of physical aggression.
A subsequent inspection by the fire department found that the hotel's safety certificate had expired. However, the hotel said the certification related to fire safety and not the structural condition of the window.
The hotel expressed condolences to Renata's family and said it was cooperating with the authorities. The incident remained under investigation.
