A Class 10 student who went missing from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly on July 28 was found buried around eight feet underground in a field nearly three weeks later. Police have alleged that the girl, identified as Lata, was killed by her uncle after her family objected to her relationship with a boy.
Lata was a minor and lived with her family in Bareilly. According to reports, her family knew about her relationship and had objected to it. Arguments reportedly took place at home after she was seen speaking to the boy over the phone.
On July 28, Lata was reportedly last seen going to the fields with her uncle, Jai Prakash. He later returned without her. When the family asked about her whereabouts, he allegedly claimed that she had eloped with her boyfriend.
The family initially believed that Lata had left. However, the boy was reportedly not convinced. After Lata stopped contacting him, he approached Bareilly’s Senior Superintendent of Police and expressed concern that she may have been harmed by her family.
Following the complaint, police questioned family members. During questioning, Jai Prakash allegedly confessed to killing Lata and told police where her body had been buried.
On August 18, police and administrative officials reached the field and began digging. After more than two hours of excavation, Lata’s body was recovered from a pit about eight feet deep. The body was subsequently sent for a post-mortem examination.
Police have alleged that Lata was strangled before her body was buried. A later report said the accused also allegedly hammered six nails into her feet, three in each foot. The report attributed the details to the accused’s alleged disclosure during questioning.
The investigation has reportedly linked the alleged killing to the family’s opposition to Lata’s relationship. However, the exact circumstances and motive will be established through the police investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
The case has once again raised concerns about violence against young people over their personal relationships. Since Lata was a minor, her identity has been referred to by her first name in reports, and the allegations against the accused remain subject to the legal process.
