A Tanzanian student’s comment on India’s Got Latent has brought attention to India’s scholarship programmes for foreign students. Faizel Fadhili Ali said he receives around Rs. 18,000 to Rs. 20,000 from the Indian government each month. He said the money helps with rent and electricity and that he also sends part of it to his mother in Tanzania. The scholarship is linked to the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), which provides scholarships to international students to study in India. India offers ICCR scholarships to Tanzanian students under its education and cultural exchange programmes. For 2026-27, Tanzania received 135 ICCR scholarship slots, up from 85, according to the High Commission of India in Tanzania. This was the highest allocation for an African country.
