BJP MP Kangana Ranaut defended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Maithili Thakur after she was trolled over a Rolls-Royce ride to Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Mumbai. Ranaut questioned why people expected politicians to remain “poor and lifeless” despite having successful careers. She made the remarks while defending Thakur amid the social media discussion over the car. The controversy came as Thakur’s constituency and home state of Bihar were battling severe floods. Thakur had declared in her election affidavit that she owned a Honda Activa scooter. The affidavit did not establish that she owned the Rolls-Royce seen in Mumbai. It could not be verified whether the Rolls-Royce belonged to Thakur. The discussion around the car has therefore focused on her election affidavit, which listed a Honda Activa, and the vehicle she was seen travelling in during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Mumbai. Ranaut’s defence came after Thakur faced trolling over the Rolls-Royce ride. The BJP MP questioned the expectation that politicians should remain “poor and lifeless” even when they have successful careers.
