Hotels across Maharashtra cleaned their kitchens before food safety inspections after IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe took charge as Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner in May 2026. Since his appointment, the FDA conducted 1,131 inspections, seized food stock worth nearly Rs. 50 crore and suspended licences of 56 restaurants, according to reports. Mundhe was an IAS officer of the 2005 batch and served in administrative posts across Maharashtra. In Solapur, his water conservation work helped make hundreds of villages tanker-free. He received the Maharashtra government’s Best Collector Award in 2016. Mundhe was transferred 25 times during his 21-year career. He said transfers gave him opportunities to bring about changes. His FDA tenure also drew criticism over staff workload and faced scrutiny from the Bombay High Court over action against an Amazon warehouse.
