Indian-origin jazz guitarist Pritesh Walia was released on bond after spending 14 days in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Walia was detained at Los Angeles airport on 2 August after returning to the city. ICE said he had overstayed his visa and was required to leave the US by August 2025. His immigration case remains ongoing. Another Indian-origin resident, Venkata Vasamsetty, was detained by ICE on 11 August during a scheduled check-in, according to reports. She had lived in the US for 27 years, held a Green Card and had previously had her deportation case closed. The detentions came as the Trump administration expanded immigration enforcement. Reuters reported that ICE made more than 800 arrests after receiving information on over 31,000 travellers from the Transportation Security Administration between January 2025 and February 2026.
