Two accused in the Uttarakhand gang rape case were allegedly assaulted by a crowd after they tried to escape police custody, according to reports. Police said the accused attempted to flee after the vehicle carrying them broke down in traffic. Officers caught them, following which a crowd gathered and allegedly assaulted the duo. The case began after a woman filed a complaint on 25 July, alleging that three men abducted and gang raped her in Rudrapur. Police later arrested all three accused during an operation on 28 July. The incident has also raised questions about mob action. Under Article 21 of the Constitution, an accused person has the right to due process of law. Those involved in assaulting the accused can face legal action under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
