IPS officer Bushra Bano was transferred from her post as Additional SP in Kharagpur, West Bengal, days after a complaint was filed over remarks in a video that circulated on social media. Bano, who cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination twice, had spoken about how coaching at Aligarh Muslim University helped her prepare for the exam. In the video, she used the greeting “Assalamualaikum”. The Hindu Legal Fund said it had submitted a complaint to the West Bengal Home Secretary, alleging religious bias in her speech. Bano was later appointed Deputy Commandant of the State Armed Police. The West Bengal government did not state that the transfer was disciplinary or link it publicly to the complaint. Two other officials were also transferred at the same time. The All India Services (Conduct) Rules require officers to maintain neutrality and fairness while discharging official duties.
