A 68-year-old woman who begged for a living was found to have more than Rs. 8.4 lakh stored at her rented house in Mandya, Karnataka, after her death. Hoor-Un-Nisa had lived alone in the house. After she died from age-related ailments, locals entered the premises to make arrangements for her funeral. They found more than 30 bags containing cash and other valuables. The money included coins and banknotes, with some bags yet to be opened. Her relatives were contacted, while the recovered money was kept at a local mosque for safekeeping. Karnataka has the Karnataka Prohibition of Beggary Act, 1975, under which people found begging can be detained in relief centres for rehabilitation and vocational training.
