Organisers of the dance production ‘Mahavidya’ have apologised after the portrayal of Maa Kali during a performance in Kolkata drew criticism on social media. The mythological dance drama was staged at Mohit Mancha in Tala Park on August 8 by dance production group Nitya – Faculty of Sight. Following the performance, viewers criticised the costume and presentation of the performer portraying Maa Kali, with some describing the depiction as inappropriate and disrespectful. Organisers issue apology In a statement shared on Facebook, the organisers expressed regret over the controversy and said they would introduce stricter checks on costumes and stage presentations in future performances. The group said the choreography, dance movements and presentation were creative decisions made by the concerned artist. According to the organisers, the team had provided the performer with the designated script and audio. The organisers also said the performer had not rehearsed in the costume used for the final show. As a result, they claimed, the team was unaware of what she would wear on stage. According to their statement, the organisers had expected the performer to wear attire similar to that of two accompanying dancers. They said she instead appeared in a different costume that had not been specified to the team beforehand. What did the organisers say? While apologising for the episode, the group acknowledged that the presentation had been inappropriate and said there should have been clearer coordination and supervision. The organisers also sought to distinguish themselves from the specific costume decision, saying the performers involved were senior and experienced dancers who had been given considerable creative freedom based on the team's trust in their professionalism. The group said it regretted the experience for viewers, artists and well-wishers. Viewers react on social media The performance also prompted critical reactions from viewers online. One viewer questioned whether the portrayal of Maa Kali could have been presented with greater dignity, while another criticised the performers over the depiction.
