Questions over ISRO privatisation emerged after nine employee associations sought clarification from ISRO Chairman V Narayanan on 4 September 2026. The concerns followed remarks by IN-SPACe Chairman Pawan Goenka that ISRO would eventually stop making launch vehicles, with manufacturing handled by private companies or PSUs. Employees raised concerns about ISRO’s future role, recruitment, promotions and the transfer of manufacturing and operational work. The concerns also came after reports that more than 100 ISRO scientists had resigned or taken voluntary retirement in recent months. On 7 September, ISRO Chairman V Narayanan said ISRO would not be privatised and would remain a government organisation. ISRO also said private-sector participation was intended to expand India’s space ecosystem while allowing ISRO to focus on advanced research and strategic missions.
