A bride in Uttarakhand walked 18 km through mountain paths in her wedding lehenga to reach her husband’s village after the lack of a motorable road forced her to complete the journey on foot. Sharmila was travelling to Undava village in Chakrata for her griha pravesh ceremony when she appealed to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to build a road connecting the village. Her appeal brought attention to the village’s road connectivity issue and a road proposal dating back to July 2020. Government records show that a road connecting Lokhandi to Udawa had been proposed in July 2020. The proposal entered the forest-clearance process, but officials received repeated queries over missing or incomplete documents. The road proposal was later delisted because the required information had not been submitted by officials, according to records on the government’s forest-clearance portal. Following Sharmila’s appeal, Chief Minister Dhami directed officials to construct the road, according to Dainik Jagran. The newspaper reported that the project report had received approval at the state level and had been forwarded to the Centre. The incident has brought renewed attention to the road connectivity issue in Undava village, where the absence of a motorable road required the bride to walk the final stretch to her husband’s home.
