A woman travelling with her family from Delhi to Deoria has alleged that jewellery worth Rs. 2.5 lakh and Rs. 25,000 in cash were stolen from their locked First AC train coupe. The incident reportedly took place on 2 November, after a man entered their compartment while they were travelling.
According to The Times of India, Sunita was travelling from Anand Vihar in Delhi to Deoria in Uttar Pradesh with her family. Her husband, Umesh, said she woke up around 1 am and found a man inside their locked coupe.
The man reportedly apologised and claimed he had entered the cabin by mistake. The family later discovered that their jewellery and cash were missing.
Sunita alleged that despite repeatedly pulling the emergency chain and calling the railway helpline, they received no assistance.
Under Indian Railways rules, passengers can report thefts to the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE), coach attendant or Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) escorts. They can also submit an FIR form to these officials, who forward it to the GRP.
The family subsequently filed a Zero FIR in Deoria. According to TOI, police contacted them to establish the sequence of events.
The incident comes amid NCRB data showing that the Government Railway Police registered 83,699 criminal cases across India in 2024, including thefts.
