A woman in Bihar’s Begusarai alleged that she was raped twice by a neighbour while her husband, a labourer, was away from the village for work. After her husband returned, she approached the police and filed an FIR. The woman alleged that instead of supporting her, a village panchayat blamed her and forced her to lick her own spit and apologise publicly. Police arrested one person in connection with the case and raids were conducted to trace the accused. According to NCRB data, more than 30,000 rape cases were registered in India in 2024. Experts note that many cases remain unreported due to social stigma and fear of consequences.
