What is the keto diet?
Ways the media portrays ‘fad’ diets
The ketogenic, or keto diet, is one of the most popular diets in America right now. This dietician broke down how and why. The keto diet method was stumbled upon in the 1920s by doctors seeking ways to control seizures in children with epilepsy. Keto practitioners take in a very low amount of carbohydrates in their diet — which led the keto diet to rank almost dead last in a recent list of popular diets in terms of health.
Carbs and fat aren’t always bad
“A diet is comprised of the foods that we eat every single day. So, the ketogenic diet is so-called because it puts a body into a state of ketosis. And what ketosis is, is when your body switches from using glucose as energy to using fat cells as energy. So, as we ingest a higher amount of fat, the body and the brain stop using glucose as the main form of energy and then switch to the added fat cells so that it speeds up weight loss. But what the media even portrays with all the fad diets that all carbs are bad. They're not. So, the reason the ketogenic diet ranked 34 out of 35 is because it's really high in saturated fat. And that amount of fat is not what we're supposed to be intaking. And it can really affect our heart health, as well as create an unhealthy relationship with food for when we break away from that period of doing the keto diet”, Lorraine Kearney, founder - New York City Nutrition tells Brut.
Don't go follow what the latest trendy diet is
In 2018, interest in the keto diet's popularity was blamed for taboos around bread and other carbs — some believe it caused a 34% crash in Wei stock according to the NYSE. The most common New Year’s resolution amongst American adults is some form of diet or weight loss based on Statista data. Kearney says that when it comes to taking their health seriously, dieters need to be informed.
