What began as a harmless craving for street food turned into a shocking case of deception and loss in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district.

A family there allegedly ended up paying a price of Rs 85 lakh for plates of momos after their 14-year-old son quietly handed over jewellery to street vendors in exchange for free food.

How the Vendors Gained the Boy’s Trust

According to the police, three youths running a momo stall befriended the Class 7 student. Over time, they gained his confidence and began offering him free momos. In return, they reportedly asked him to bring jewellery from home.

The boy, unaware of the consequences, agreed.

Jewellery Taken Piece by Piece

The minor was so hooked on the street food that he began secretly removing gold ornaments from the house. These were taken from a cupboard without the family’s knowledge and handed over to the vendors.

This continued over a period of time, with multiple pieces of jewellery going missing. The family did not immediately realise anything was wrong.

Discovery After a Family Visit

The matter came to light when the boy’s aunt visited the house and asked about her jewellery. When the family opened the almirah to check, they were stunned to find that all the ornaments were missing.

On being questioned, the boy revealed that he had given the jewellery to the momo vendors in exchange for food.

Police Complaint and Investigation

The boy’s father approached the police and filed a complaint. An FIR has been registered, and an investigation is underway.

Police officials said the accused vendors are currently absconding and efforts are being made to trace them. The recovered value of the missing jewellery is estimated to be around Rs 85 lakh.

Authorities have also cautioned families to remain vigilant and to educate children about personal safety and the risks of manipulation by strangers.

The case has sparked widespread discussion online, highlighting concerns around child vulnerability, street-level exploitation, and the importance of parental awareness.
