Sex changes the brain’s electrical activity, its network dynamics, its attention and even the way it represents the self.

Sex is a whole-brain state.

As arousal builds, brain systems involved in sensation, motivation, emotion, reward and interoception become increasingly engaged.

The brain starts turning down the volume on the outside world.

Research has found changes in theta, alpha, beta and gamma oscillations, together with changes in synchronisation between neural regions.

There is no single “sex brainwave.”

The important phenomenon is the changing choreography of neural activity.

The brain isn't producing one signal.
Billions of neurons are changing how they coordinate.

This may help explain the feeling of becoming completely absorbed in the experience.

Less observing yourself.
More experiencing yourself.

And orgasm isn't the brain switching off.

Research shows widespread neural activation, with activity reaching a peak around orgasm before moving into recovery.

The brain doesn't go blank.
It reaches a different mode of organisation.

Stress tends to pull attention toward threat, uncertainty and the future.

A temporary change in what the brain prioritises.

And safety matters.

If sex involves anxiety, conflict, pressure or fear, the nervous system may remain in—or move further into stress.

Because the brain isn't responding to sex alone.

It's responding to the experience of sex.

Pleasure.
Safety.
Touch.
Meaning.
Connection.

All of it becomes neural information.

So perhaps the most fascinating thing about sex isn't what it releases.

It's what it reorganises.

The electrical rhythms.

The networks.

The attention.

The relationship between brain and body.

Sex doesn't just make you feel something.
For a while, it changes the way your brain processes everything.
