How do people become part of extraordinary movements?

History has witnessed countless movements.

Political movements. Religious movements. Financial bubbles. Social campaigns. Hashtag revolutions. Conspiracy theories. Health trends. Consumer crazes.

Some transformed societies for the better.

Others caused unimaginable harm.

Yet they all began the same way.

With an idea.

So why do some ideas spread like wildfire while others disappear?

The answer may lie less in the idea itself—and more in the human brain.

We often assume people join movements because they have carefully evaluated the evidence.

Sometimes they do.

But neuroscience suggests that evidence is only one part of the equation.

Humans evolved in small tribes where survival depended on belonging. For most of our evolutionary history, exclusion from the group could reduce the chances of survival.

Our brains are therefore deeply attuned not only to information—but also to identity, belonging, and social signals.

When an idea begins spreading rapidly, several brain systems are engaged simultaneously.

The Salience Network continuously evaluates what deserves attention.

When an idea appears everywhere—in conversations, news, social media, or among friends—the brain naturally begins treating it as important.

Not necessarily because it is true.

But because it is impossible to ignore.

At the same time, the brain's reward circuitry reinforces behaviours that increase social acceptance.

Agreement.

Recognition.

Approval.

Belonging.

These are not trivial experiences.

They activate neural processes that have helped humans maintain social bonds for thousands of years.

Then another shift often occurs.

The movement is no longer simply something people support.

It becomes something they identify with.

Psychologists call this social identity.

Once beliefs become intertwined with identity, new information is no longer evaluated purely on its evidence.

It is also evaluated through questions such as:

"Does this threaten my group?"

"Does this strengthen my identity?"

"Will agreeing—or disagreeing—affect my sense of belonging?"

At this point, changing a belief can begin to feel like losing a part of oneself.

This is where several well-studied cognitive processes begin reinforcing one another.

Social proof: "If millions believe this, perhaps they know something I don't."

Confirmation bias: We naturally seek information that supports what we already believe.

Emotional salience: Content that provokes fear, anger, hope, or moral outrage is more likely to capture attention and be remembered.

None of these processes make people irrational.

They make people human.

Social media changed one critical variable.

Not human nature.

Scale.

For the first time in history, billions of brains can influence one another almost instantly.

Ideas now spread through digital networks at a speed our brains never evolved to navigate.

What once took decades can now happen in days.

Sometimes, hours.

The neuroscience itself is neither good nor bad.

The same mechanisms that help people unite to fight injustice can also amplify misinformation.

The same brain that builds communities can also deepen divisions.

The biology is remarkably similar.

Only the ideas differ.

Perhaps this is one of the most important lessons neuroscience offers us.

The greatest threat is rarely that people have different opinions.

It is that we stop examining why we hold them.

Because the moment identity becomes more important than curiosity...

...the brain becomes less interested in discovering what is true and more interested in defending what already feels true.

Perhaps the most important question isn't:

"What movement are people joining?"

Perhaps it's:

"What is happening inside the human brain when a movement becomes part of someone's identity?"
