Doctors at AIIMS Jodhpur began an indefinite strike after the death of a postgraduate resident doctor while on duty, with resident doctors raising concerns over working conditions and long duty hours. Dr Raj Nilesh Yadav, a 31-year-old first-year postgraduate resident in the Department of Anaesthesia, was found unconscious inside a hospital washroom on 22 September while he was on duty. According to police, syringes were found beside Yadav, and they suspect that he may have injected himself with a lethal drug. The circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated. Following his death, resident doctors at AIIMS Jodhpur began an indefinite strike. They demanded compensation for Yadav’s family and accountability from the administration over concerns about long working hours. The protesting doctors also covered their mouths with tape as they mourned the death of their colleague. The issue of working hours among postgraduate doctors has also been raised before the Supreme Court. In August 2026, the National Medical Commission told the court that long, consecutive 24-hour shifts were causing physical and mental exhaustion among postgraduate doctors. According to a Times of India report cited in the protest coverage, more than 150 doctor suicides have been reported over the last five years. The strike at AIIMS Jodhpur has brought attention to concerns raised by resident doctors about duty hours and working conditions following Yadav’s death.
