Students at IIT Delhi continued protesting after MSc Physics student Rishikesh Kumar died by suicide on campus on 22 August.
Students said Kumar had taken a semester-long withdrawal after his father’s death and received treatment for mental health difficulties. One student, speaking to Brut on condition of anonymity, alleged that Kumar was “kicked out” of his hostel and faced academic pressure. Another student told The Indian Express that his name was allegedly missing from the hostel rolls after he returned.
Students demanded an investigation, the resignation of four officials, compensation for Kumar’s mother and protection from action against protesters.
The four officials named by students were the Dean and Associate Dean of Student Welfare, and the Dean and Associate Dean of Hostel Management.
On 25 August, IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee announced a five-member external team to investigate the events leading up to Kumar’s death.
