A Class 9 student was allegedly assaulted by five senior students at a residential school in Dagshai, Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district, on 5 September. Police registered an FIR after the student’s parents approached them.
According to police, the five students allegedly dragged the Class 9 student from his hostel room and assaulted him. The accused students, who study in Classes 11 and 12, were booked under the Himachal Pradesh Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009, and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The school suspended all five students. The principal described the incident as a case of “student rivalry”.
In May 2001, the Supreme Court issued guidelines to prevent ragging in educational institutions. The order was made absolute in August 2001.
