A fire broke out at the 86-year-old Central Theatre in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, on 12 September, near the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, with no casualties reported. The defunct theatre was used as a parking facility. Initial findings suggested that an electrical short circuit triggered the fire. Five fire and rescue vehicles were deployed as thick smoke engulfed the area. As per Times of India, even after two hours into the firefighting operation, only 60% of the blaze was brought under control. Further investigation was underway by the time of publishing.
