An eight-year-old boy died after being run over by a car in Mumbai’s Bandra area, according to reports. The incident took place when the boy was on the road. An eyewitness alleged that the woman driving the car was speaking on her phone while driving. The eyewitness further claimed that the driver did not stop after the first tyre ran over the child and that the second tyre also ran over him. The driver allegedly tried to leave the spot but was stopped by people nearby. Police took the 45-year-old woman, identified as Meghna Rawal, into custody. The boy’s father said he had lost his only son and sought justice. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, mobile phone use while driving was linked to 3,395 fatalities and 6,255 injuries in India in 2022. Hit-and-run cases accounted for 14.6% of road accidents and 18.1% of road deaths that year.
