A girl in Bihar’s Jamui was allegedly stopped and sexually harassed by a group of men while she was returning from coaching classes with a male friend. The incident was filmed, and the video later surfaced online. Bihar Minister of Information and Public Relations Shrawon Kumar and JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha described the incident as an isolated or “sporadic” occurrence. Kumar said, “The world is not entirely free from crime. Sporadic incidents do occur,” while saying action would be taken. At least three men were arrested in the case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Nandan Yadav, identified as the prime accused, was later shot in the leg during a police encounter, according to police. Yadav and another accused involved in the encounter are both 25 years old, according to The Indian Express. The incident has also brought attention to allegations of moral policing in Bihar. In the Jamui case, the group stopped the girl and her male friend while they were returning from coaching classes. The two pleaded with the men to let them go and offered to have their books checked. The group eventually left them. Videos from the incident show the group surrounding the two and recording what was happening. The girl was allegedly subjected to inappropriate physical contact. The case has led to arrests and a police investigation, while the remarks describing the incident as sporadic have drawn attention to how such incidents are discussed.
