A farmer was found murdered in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat. But it was the WhatsApp chats uncovered during the investigation that allegedly exposed a trail of events leading up to his death.
The murder of 44-year-old Pramod Kumar has led to the arrest of his wife, Urmila, and a man allegedly linked to her. Investigators believe digital evidence could prove crucial to the case.
What did police find in the chats, and how did the investigation lead them to the two accused? Here’s what we know so far.

What Happened In Baghpat?
Pramod, a resident of the Baraut area, left home on the night of 18 October 2026, reportedly to watch a Ramleela performance. He did not return.
His body was subsequently found in a field near a tube well in Kotana village. According to reports, he had suffered severe injuries to his face.
Police began investigating the murder and examined the circumstances surrounding Pramod’s death. Their inquiry eventually focused on his wife, Urmila, and Sikandar, a motorcycle mechanic who rented a shop belonging to Pramod.
According to police, the two had been in a relationship since 2024. Police allege that they decided to kill Pramod after he learnt about the relationship and objected to it.

What Was The Alleged Plan?
According to the police, Urmila allegedly handed Sikandar two sleeping pills on 18 October and instructed him to mix them with Pramod’s liquor.
Sikandar allegedly took Pramod towards a tubewell, where they drank alcohol. Police said he followed a route through the fields to avoid CCTV cameras, as allegedly instructed by Urmila.
Investigators claim that Sikandar mixed the pills into the liquor. When Pramod became intoxicated, Sikandar allegedly attacked him with the bottle. Police said the attack continued with broken glass after the bottle shattered.
He then allegedly dragged Pramod’s body to a nearby sugarcane field.
These details form part of the police’s account of the crime. The allegations will have to be tested through the legal process.
How Did It Come To Light?
One of the key aspects of the case is the alleged exchange of WhatsApp messages during the killing.
According to police, Urmila repeatedly asked Sikandar for updates while he was with Pramod. Investigators said the messages indicated that she wanted to know whether the killing had taken place.
Police further alleged that Sikandar confirmed the killing through a message and that Urmila said she would block his number and contact him herself if necessary.
Investigators said Sikandar had taken screenshots of some of their exchanges before the messages were deleted. These screenshots, along with call detail records and questioning, reportedly helped police piece together the alleged conspiracy.
Digital evidence can help establish a sequence of communications, identify contacts and support other evidence. However, investigators must establish the authenticity and context of such material, and courts assess it alongside the rest of the evidence.

Who Are The Accused?
Urmila is Pramod’s wife. Sikandar, also known as Kala in some reports, worked as a motorcycle mechanic and had rented a shop owned by Pramod.
Police allege that the two wanted to move to Dehradun and start a new life together. Investigators believe this was the motive behind the alleged murder plot.
Both have been arrested in connection with the case.
The initial investigation also involved suspicion against other villagers, according to reports. Their roles were being examined, and the available reporting does not establish that they were involved in the alleged conspiracy.
An arrest is not a conviction. The prosecution must establish the charges through admissible evidence before a court.
What Does The Law Say?
As the alleged offence took place in October 2026, the relevant criminal law is the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which came into force on 1 July 2024.
Section 101 defines murder, while Section 103 provides for its punishment. A person convicted of murder can face the death penalty or imprisonment for life, along with a fine.
Section 61 deals with criminal conspiracy. It applies when two or more people agree to commit an illegal act, or to achieve a lawful objective through illegal means. The punishment depends on the nature of the conspiracy and the applicable provisions.
If investigators allege that more than one person planned and carried out a murder, the prosecution must establish each accused person’s role and the evidence supporting the relevant charges. The precise charges in this case should be confirmed from the FIR and subsequent court records.

What Do The Statistics Show?
The Baghpat case comes amid a wider pattern of murders in which relationships are recorded as a possible motive. According to the National Crime Records Bureau’s Crime in India 2024 report, India recorded 27,049 murder cases in 2024, including 2,802 attributed to love affairs or illicit relationships.
With both accused arrested, the focus now shifts to whether investigators can substantiate their allegations through the evidence collected. The case will ultimately depend on how that evidence is examined during the legal proceedings.
