Family disputes in India can sometimes go beyond arguments and turn into serious crimes. Conflicts over relationships, accusations and old tensions can escalate inside homes before anyone outside the family realises what is happening.

A case from Indore has now brought one such family conflict into focus. It involved a newlywed woman and her sister-in-law, with tensions reportedly linked to a comment about a family member who was already in jail in connection with a rape case.

What followed unfolded inside the family’s home and later led police to piece together the events through CCTV footage and questioning.

How It Started?

The victim was identified as Vandana Kushwah, while the accused was identified as her sister-in-law, Parvati Bai Kushwaha.

Vandana had married Upendra Patel on 11 August 2026. Police said the marriage had not been accepted by some family members and the couple had initially lived separately in a rented house.

The tension between Vandana and Parvati reportedly began around Raksha Bandhan.

According to police, Vandana made a remark about Parvati's brother during the festival. The comment allegedly angered Parvati and led to a dispute between the two women.

What Case Was Against Parvati's Brother?

Parvati's brother was already in Damoh Jail in connection with a rape case, according to NDTV.

This detail is important because the reports link the alleged remark by Vandana directly to the tensions between the two women.

However, the available reports do not provide enough verified information about the underlying rape case to establish the man's guilt or give further details about the allegations.

He was facing a separate criminal case. He was not accused of Vandana's murder.

The murder case instead centres on Parvati, who police allege attacked Vandana following their dispute.

How Did The Crime Unfold?

On 3 September, the dispute allegedly turned violent at the family's home in New Nehru Nagar. Parvati allegedly attacked Vandana with a kitchen knife, striking her neck. Her children were at school, while both women's husbands were away.

After the alleged attack, police said Parvati put Vandana's body in a water tank and left for the hospital where her husband was being treated. Neighbours had reportedly heard screams.

Vandana's absence later raised concerns, leading police to the house, where they found her body. CCTV allegedly showed Parvati leaving the house. Police traced her to the hospital and brought her in for questioning.

According to police, Parvati initially tried to mislead investigators before admitting to the alleged killing. Police also recovered the knife, while Vandana's body was sent for post-mortem.

What Legal Action Has Been Taken?

Police arrested Parvati on 4 September, a day after the alleged killing.

A murder case has been registered against her and the investigation is continuing. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, the alleged motive and the evidence collected from the house and surrounding area.

At this stage, Parvati is an accused, not a convicted person. The allegations against her will have to be tested through the legal process.

Police are now working to establish the complete sequence of events leading to Vandana's death.
