School should be a place where every child feels safe, accepted and free to be themselves. No student should have to face humiliation because of their caste or food habits.
But a 16-year-old Dalit student's death in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore has raised disturbing questions about what allegedly happened at his school.
His family has alleged caste-based harassment. Police have arrested a teacher and booked three others in connection with the case.
What did the student allegedly face at school? Did his family raise concerns before his death? And what has the police investigation revealed so far?

What Happened At The Coimbatore School?
A question about food habits allegedly preceded the harassment of A Akilan, a 16-year-old student belonging to the Scheduled Caste at Shri K K Naidu Higher Secondary School in Coimbatore.
According to a police complaint filed by his mother, Kousalya Devi, the incident began a few months ago when Akilan's class teacher, P Vijayakumar, was enrolling Scheduled Caste students for a scholarship scheme.
During the process, the teacher allegedly asked students who ate beef. Akilan and another student stood up.
His mother alleged that two classmates subsequently began harassing Akilan with caste-based remarks. She also accused them of physically assaulting him.
According to her complaint, Akilan raised the issue with his teacher and the school's headmaster, Arun Kumar, but they failed to take action.
On 21 October 2026, Kousalya returned home from work at around 1 pm and found her son dead. Police shifted his body to ESI Government Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Akilan's family subsequently demanded a proper investigation and action against those they held responsible for his death.

What Action Have The Police Taken?
On 21 October, Peelamedu police registered a case against four people following the complaint.
The accused include teacher Vijayakumar, headmaster Arunkumar and two students. The teacher was arrested on 22 October, while the headmaster and the two students were under investigation, according to The New Indian Express.
The case includes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 108, which deals with abetment of suicide, and Section 115(2), which relates to voluntarily causing hurt. Police have also invoked provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Akilan's parents and relatives demanded the headmaster's arrest, alleging that he had failed to act despite being informed about the harassment. Relatives and members of social organisations also staged a road blockade outside the Peelamedu police station. The protest was withdrawn after discussions with the police.
The Tamil Nadu State Commission for Adi Dravidar and Tribal Communities has sought a report from the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner on the death and the action taken in the case.
The allegations against the teacher, headmaster and students remain subject to investigation. Their legal responsibility, if any, will be determined through the due process of law.
How Common Are Crimes Against Dalits In India?
Akilan's death is not the only case to raise concerns about caste-based discrimination in educational institutions. Similar allegations have emerged from other parts of the country.
In April 2026, 23-year-old dental student Nithin Raj died after falling from a college building in Kerala. His family alleged that he had faced caste-based harassment and verbal abuse by faculty members.
In July 2026, a Dalit student in Jharkhand alleged that fellow students assaulted him in a hostel for nearly four hours and used casteist slurs. Police registered an FIR against six students.
These cases come amid a larger pattern of reported crimes against marginalised communities. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recorded 55,698 cases of crimes against Scheduled Castes across India in 2024. However, the figure covers reported crimes across different settings, not just incidents in educational institutions.

The Bigger Question: Who Protects Students When They Speak Up?
Akilan's death raises a larger question about how schools respond when students report caste-based harassment. His parents have alleged that school authorities failed to intervene despite being informed about the alleged abuse.
Schools are expected to provide a safe environment where students can learn without facing discrimination. But when complaints are ignored or not addressed promptly, students may be left without the support they need.
The police investigation will examine what the school knew, whether any action was taken and the role of those named in the complaint. The case also highlights the importance of accessible complaint mechanisms and trusted adults who can help students report harassment without fear of further targeting.
