For decades, Mushtaq Khan was a familiar face in Hindi cinema. He was rarely the lead, but his supporting characters often stayed with audiences long after the film ended. From Baihar To Bombay
Mushtaq Khan came from Baihar in Madhya Pradesh and completed his master's degree in nearby Balaghat, according to a 2019 interview quoted by The Times of India. His interest in acting began during his school years. He recalled performing and singing in school plays from Class 6 and later writing, directing and acting in plays during college.
His father was a garment dealer and initially did not support his son's plans to enter cinema. His elder brother, however, encouraged him.
Khan eventually left for Bombay after an incident involving students from his college and police officers created unrest in the area. He later recalled that his father wanted him away from the situation and that he used the opportunity to pursue acting.
In Bombay, his friend Suresh Zargar introduced him to the Bharatiya Jan Natya Manch, associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association, or IPTA. Theatre became an important part of his early career.
One of his notable stage productions was Dronacharya, written by Shankar Shesh. Khan later recalled that the play received a strong response and helped him get more theatre work.

His First Film
Khan made his screen debut in Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai, which was released in 1980. He then continued to build his career through supporting roles rather than conventional leading parts.
During the following years, he appeared in films including Aashiqui, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin and Sadak. His filmography later expanded to include Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, Jodi No. 1, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Aankhen, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Rowdy Rathore and Golmaal: Fun Unlimited.
He also worked in television. His credits included shows such as Wagle Ki Duniya, Chamatkar and Tedhe Medhe Sapne. His later work extended to projects such as Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi and The Railway Men.

Then Came Welcome
For a younger generation of Hindi-film viewers, Khan is perhaps most recognisable as the hockey player in Anees Bazmee's Welcome, released in 2007.
His character appears in the film while narrating how he lost his leg and became a hockey player. The scene became one of the film's remembered comic moments.
Khan also worked with Bazmee in other projects, and the filmmaker paid tribute to him after his death. Bazmee wrote that he was "shocked and speechless" by Khan's passing and remembered him as an artist and friend.
Khan continued acting in later years, appearing in films such as Gadar 2, Badhaai Do and Stree 2.
What Happened To Mushtaq Khan?
Khan died in Mumbai on 24 September 2026 after a battle with cancer.
According to reports, he had first been diagnosed with cancer several years earlier and had recovered before the disease returned. His business partner said he had been admitted to Nanavati Hospital after his condition worsened and died at around 7 pm on Thursday.
Reports have differed on the specific type of cancer, with some identifying it as lung cancer and another report describing it as liver cancer. The Indian Express reported his death following a prolonged battle with cancer without specifying the type.
He is survived by his family. NDTV reported that his funeral would take place on 25 September and that he is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
