The CBI has filed a chargesheet against Samarth Singh and his mother, Giribala Singh, in connection with the death of model and actor Twisha Sharma in Bhopal.
The agency alleges that Twisha faced sustained psychological harassment and mental cruelty during her marriage and that the alleged treatment contributed to her death.
The chargesheet relies on WhatsApp messages, phone records, counselling records, witness statements, CCTV footage and other material gathered during the investigation.
The chargesheet represents the CBI's case against the accused. The allegations have not been established by a court.
What happened in Twisha's final hours?
One of the key parts of the chargesheet is its reconstruction of the period shortly before Twisha's death.
According to the CBI, Twisha sent messages and made calls indicating that she was distressed and wanted help.
The agency has cited communications in which she allegedly told family members that she felt trapped, was facing continuous mental harassment and wanted to leave her matrimonial home.
Recent reports on the chargesheet say investigators have also reconstructed her final 90 minutes using messages, phone records and CCTV footage.
A message that Twisha allegedly sent to her sister-in-law shortly before her death has emerged as a significant part of the CBI's account. According to reports citing the chargesheet, the message was sent at around 9:36 pm on 12 May.
We are not reproducing the full message here because of its distressing nature.
CBI alleges sustained mental cruelty
The CBI alleges that Twisha was repeatedly humiliated and verbally abused by her husband, Samarth.
The agency further alleges that Giribala supported her son and encouraged the behaviour when Twisha complained.
The chargesheet says the two allegedly acted with a common intention to subject Twisha to prolonged mental cruelty.
The allegations form the basis of the CBI's case and remain subject to judicial scrutiny.
Pregnancy became a point of conflict
The chargesheet says Twisha became pregnant in April 2026.
According to the CBI, she was uncertain about continuing the pregnancy amid alleged abuse and the deteriorating state of her marriage.
The agency says she later decided to terminate the pregnancy and that disagreements surrounding the decision further intensified tensions between her and her husband and in-laws.
The BBC had previously reported allegations from Twisha's family that her husband and mother-in-law questioned the baby's paternity and pressured her to have an abortion.
Giribala Singh denied that account, telling the BBC that Twisha had herself wanted the abortion because she did not want children.

The alleged Rs. 20 lakh financial dispute
The CBI has also referred to a financial dispute between Twisha and Samarth.
According to the chargesheet, Twisha was allegedly pressured to transfer investments worth around Rs. 20 lakh from her DEMAT account into a joint account with Samarth.
The agency alleges that she refused and subsequently faced further mental harassment.

What evidence has the CBI cited?

WhatsApp conversations
Phone calls and records
Counselling records
CCTV footage
Witness statements
Forensic psychological assessment
Twisha's personal communications
The CBI says these materials were used to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding her death.
TL;DR | News At a Glance
The CBI has chargesheeted Twisha Sharma's husband Samarth Singh and mother-in-law Giribala Singh.
The agency alleges sustained mental cruelty during her marriage.
The chargesheet details disputes over her pregnancy and an alleged ₹20 lakh financial row.
It also cites messages and calls made by Twisha shortly before her death.
The allegations against the accused will be tested in court.
What did the post-mortem examinations find?
The chargesheet refers to two post-mortem examinations.
The first was conducted at AIIMS Bhopal, while the second was conducted by an AIIMS Delhi medical board.
Both concluded that the cause of death was ante-mortem hanging and found no injuries suggestive of assault before death.
This finding is important because the CBI's case concerns alleged mental cruelty and abetment to suicide, rather than an allegation that Twisha was physically assaulted to death.
What are Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh accused of?
The CBI has invoked provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to cruelty by a husband or his relatives, abetment of suicide and common intention, according to reports on the chargesheet.
The agency has also kept aspects of the alleged dowry-related offences under further investigation, with additional investigation permitted in certain areas.
What happens next?
The chargesheet is now part of the court proceedings.
The CBI has said further forensic material, including reports relating to Twisha's iPhone, CCTV DVR and voice samples, was still awaited in the investigation.
The case will now be tested through the judicial process.
