Dowry demands can continue to strain marriages long after the wedding, sometimes turning family disputes into allegations of prolonged harassment. A recent case from Pune has brought this issue back into focus after a woman was found dead in a residential apartment, leaving behind messages that have become central to the investigation.

Her family has made serious allegations against her husband and in-laws, while police have arrested her husband. But what happened in the days leading up to her death, and what did she reportedly tell her family before the incident?

What Happened?

The woman, identified as Payal Zambre Patil, was an IT professional who had reportedly quit her job. She was married to Akshay Zambre Patil in 2019, and the couple had a daughter.

According to police, Payal had an argument with her mother-in-law on 1 November, Sunday, following which she left her matrimonial home.

On Monday morning, she reportedly sent messages to some people, including her brother, stating that her mother-in-law would be responsible if anything happened to her.

Her family and in-laws subsequently began searching for her. She was eventually found dead from a ceiling fan in another flat in an apartment complex near her residence. The incident came to light around 11:30 am.

Police said no suicide note was recovered from the flat.

Payal's brother, Rishikesh Pawar, alleged that her in-laws appeared unconcerned when he initially reached their home. He claimed they started searching for her only after the family questioned them about her whereabouts.

According to his account, the family returned within minutes and informed him that Payal was in a nearby flat. He alleged that the flat's door was locked from inside and that he entered through the rear balcony, where he found her dead.

What Her Family Has Alleged?

Payal's family has alleged that she faced physical and mental harassment from her husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law and sister-in-law over repeated demands for gold and other valuables.

Her uncle claimed that her in-laws demanded 10 tolas of gold from her parental family every Diwali. This year, her family reportedly told them that financial difficulties made it impossible to meet the demand immediately and requested more time.

The FIR, however, records a demand for five tolas of gold every Diwali.

Her family also alleged that the harassment was not limited to financial demands.

According to the complaint, Payal was mentally harassed during her pregnancy in 2022, with her husband and in-laws allegedly pressuring her to give birth to a boy.

When she delivered a girl on 30 March 2023, her in-laws allegedly argued with her at the hospital and said they would not take responsibility for either her or the child.

The complaint also stated that her parents had given 50 tolas of gold and Rs. 25 lakh in cash at the time of her marriage, apart from bearing the wedding expenses.

What Is The Police Action?

Following Payal's death, Swargate police registered a case against four members of her in-laws' family.

They include her husband Akshay, mother-in-law Mangal Arvind Zambre, father-in-law Arvind Zambre and sister-in-law Akshata.

Police arrested Akshay and formed two teams to trace the remaining accused.

The case has been registered under Sections 108, 85, 3(5), 351 and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

These provisions cover alleged abetment of suicide, cruelty by a husband or his relatives, acts committed with common intention, criminal intimidation, intentional insult and offences relating to giving, taking or demanding dowry.

Police have sent Payal's body to Sassoon General Hospital for post-mortem examination. A forensic team has also inspected the flat, while investigators are examining CCTV footage from the residential society to establish the sequence of events.

While Payal's relatives have alleged that she was murdered and her death was staged as a suicide, police have registered a case of abetment of suicide. The circumstances of her death remain under investigation.

The Bigger Picture Behind Dowry Harassment

India's Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, makes giving, taking and demanding dowry punishable offences. Yet, cases of marital cruelty and dowry-related harassment continue to be reported across the country.

According to the NCRB's Crime In India 2024 report, 1,20,227 cases of cruelty by husbands or their relatives were registered in 2024. The same year also saw 5,737 dowry deaths and 12,343 cases registered under the Dowry Prohibition Act.

These figures put Payal's case into a larger context, raising questions about the pressure women can face when their families are expected to meet financial demands even years after marriage.

The investigation will now have to establish whether the alleged harassment took place and the circumstances that led to Payal's death. Her final messages, her family's allegations and the evidence being examined by police remain central to the case.
