A reported disagreement over a child wanting to play outside preceded a tragedy in Rajasthan’s Alwar district, where a mother and her two young children died on 18 October 2026.

Police said the woman allegedly attacked the children with scissors before injuring herself.

What happened inside the house? What led to the incident, and what have the police found so far? The sequence of events offers some answers, but key questions about the tragedy remain.

What Happened In Alwar?

The incident took place in Dantiya village, near Kherli town in Alwar district. According to The Times of India, the woman was identified as 27-year-old Usha Sharma.

Her children, five-year-old Mukul and four-year-old Nandini, were allegedly attacked with scissors inside a room at their home. Police said Usha took the children into the room and shut the door before attacking them. She subsequently inflicted injuries on herself.

Villagers reportedly rushed to the house after hearing the children scream. They forced open the door and found Usha and both children injured.

The villagers took them to Kherli Sub-District Hospital. Mukul was declared dead at the hospital, while Usha and Nandini died during treatment.

Usha’s younger sister, Manisha, was also injured after becoming distressed on seeing the scene. She reportedly struck her head against a wall and the floor. After receiving initial treatment, she was referred to a district hospital for further care.

Why Did She Do It?

The precise circumstances leading to the incident remain under investigation.

According to PTI, an argument reportedly arose after Nandini wanted to go outside to play. Usha was allegedly upset about the girl going outside before taking both children into the room.

Usha’s husband, Amit Sharma, reportedly works for a private company in Gujarat. Her sister’s husband works at a private hospital in Jaipur, according to the reports.

What Action Have The Police Taken?

Police personnel from Kherli and officers from the Kathumar circle reached Dantiya village after receiving information about the incident. They inspected the scene and began gathering details about what happened.

The bodies were taken to the hospital mortuary, and the investigation was continuing when the reports were published on 18 October.

The available reports do not establish that a specific FIR had been registered, nor do they confirm any arrests. Since the woman identified as the suspected perpetrator also died, the legal and investigative position differs from a case in which an accused person survives to face trial.

The authorities can still investigate the circumstances of the deaths, collect evidence, record witness accounts and establish the sequence of events. The exact findings will depend on the evidence gathered and the official investigation.

What Does The Law Say?

India’s criminal law distinguishes between investigating a suspected offence and prosecuting a living accused person.

Under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, murder is punishable with death or imprisonment for life, along with a fine. This provision sets out the punishment for a person convicted of murder; it does not mean that guilt can be presumed before the facts are established.

The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, also provides for police inquiries into deaths. Section 194 covers police inquiries and reports in cases including suspected suicide, death caused by another person and deaths occurring in circumstances that raise suspicion of an offence.

In this case, the investigation can help establish how the children and their mother died and whether the available evidence supports the reported sequence of events. However, if the suspected perpetrator is confirmed to have died, a criminal trial against that person cannot proceed in the ordinary way.

The Bigger Question: How Do We Understand Such Tragedies?

The Alwar incident also highlights the limits of what can be concluded from early reports.

A sudden act of violence within a family may prompt speculation about relationships, mental health, domestic circumstances or personal difficulties. But none of these should be presented as the cause without reliable evidence.

The fact that an argument was reportedly involved does not explain why the incident escalated, and the available information does not establish whether any underlying issue contributed to it.

For now, the focus remains on establishing the facts, supporting the surviving family members and avoiding unsupported claims about the woman’s motives.

The deaths of two young children and their mother leave serious questions about the circumstances of the incident. A careful investigation, rather than speculation, is necessary to answer them.
