What Happened In Behala?

The incident took place on Sunday, 25 October, in the Sarsuna area of Behala, within Kolkata's south-western neighbourhoods. Reports place the initial encounter near Khalpar Math, in the Khudiram Pally area.

According to the preliminary police account, the 18-year-old had gone to meet the 13-year-old girl with his 19-year-old friend. An acquaintance of the girl's maternal uncle allegedly saw the teenager kissing her and informed members of her family.

The girl's father and maternal uncle then allegedly took the two young men to their house, where they were assaulted and confined. The family subsequently summoned the 18-year-old's father to the residence.

According to the father, he was assaulted after arriving. He alleged that the attackers threatened him with a gun and gave him a choice: kill his own son or walk naked alongside him.

The three were allegedly forced to remove their clothes and walk naked for around 50 metres along a lane outside the house. The incident reportedly drew onlookers, some of whom recorded videos that later circulated on social media.

The precise sequence of events and the role of each person involved remain subject to the police investigation.

What Is The Police Action?

The teenager's father lodged a complaint at Sarsuna police station on Monday, 26 October. Police registered a case invoking multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those relating to attempted murder, causing hurt or grievous hurt, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation and kidnapping. Provisions of the Arms Act have also been invoked.

The girl's parents and maternal uncle were arrested on Monday. Police said they were conducting raids to trace other alleged accomplices.

All three victims underwent medical examinations. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and recording statements from witnesses to establish the sequence of events.

The victims alleged that they were threatened with a firearm. However, police said no weapon had been recovered at the time of the latest reports on 26 October.

The incident also triggered tension in the neighbourhood, with angry residents allegedly vandalising the girl's family's house. Police intervened to bring the situation under control.

As of 27 October, reports indicated that the investigation was continuing.

The Bigger Question: Who Gets To Decide The Punishment?

The incident raises concerns about vigilante violence, public humiliation and the use of threats to settle personal disputes.

The age of the girl makes the circumstances of the reported relationship particularly important. Authorities must examine the facts involving both teenagers and apply the relevant laws. But concerns about a minor cannot justify alleged violence against the young man, his father or his friend.

There is also the question of public intervention. Videos of the alleged parade reportedly circulated on social media, while residents later confronted the situation with anger of their own. The episode highlights how quickly an alleged private dispute can turn into public violence, followed by further unrest.

The central issue is not whether a family can object to a relationship. It is whether anyone can use violence, confinement or threats to impose their own punishment.

In this case, the police investigation must establish who took part, whether a firearm was used and what legal action the evidence supports. The outcome will depend on the evidence gathered and the judicial process.
