Japan will no longer have any giant pandas for the first time in 50 years. Twin pandas Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei will leave Tokyo’s Ueno Zoological Gardens and return to China. The exchange is part of the longstanding panda diplomacy relationship between China and Japan. China practices panda diplomacy by loaning or gifting giant pandas to other countries as a sign of friendship and goodwill. The final public viewing of the popular panda twins Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei will be held on Jan. 25, 2026.
