I believe the current understanding, one those with tics have been aware of for some time, is that people who are genetically vulnerable to developing tics are developing them after seeing people ticking. People who tic are already aware that being around others ticking can make them way worse as they can feed off each other. There definitely is a problem with young teens (I'm talking 13-15) faking things for attention but it is almost exclusively those who haven't developed enough to realise why that's bad. To the person who commented that this is somehow to do with medication, adhd medication does not give you tics. Adhd medications are stimulants that fill the receptors in adhd brains so they don't feel under stimulated and bored when they need to concentrate. Nothing to do with tics.

In my opinion I think over medication is messing with their system. When I was young we didn't medicated kids because of ADHD or other things. We didn't have all these symptoms today.

I think it’s a way for them to be “seen” as well as something that’s been used for decades—mirroring.
