Videos from the Jantar Mantar protests demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation showed confrontations between protesters and Delhi Police. Allegations of women protesters being manhandled during the protests have since led to a police clarification. The protest began on 2 October. On 4 October, around 500 protesters were detained and taken away in 10-15 buses, according to The Hindu. Delhi Police said women protesters were treated with “dignity” and “due regard”. DCP Neha Yadav said only women constables were deployed to handle female protesters. She also referred to alleged harassment faced by female police personnel and said “respect is mutual”. Social media users challenged the police statement by sharing videos that they said showed male police personnel handling women protesters. One such incident at Jantar Mantar on 4 October was recorded by journalist Shyam Meera Singh. The police clarification came amid complaints by three women journalists, who alleged sexual harassment by police personnel during the protest. Their complaints were sent to the Crime Branch for inquiry. ACP Vivek Bhagat, who was injured during the July anti-paper leak protests, was among the officers being investigated. The protests have also seen Opposition leaders join the demonstrations since they began on 2 October.
